Windows Wednesday: Windows 3D Virtual Desktop

If you are like me and spend most of your time running Linux, then you are probably accustomed to using virtual desktops. Virtual desktops are great for being able to spread out your work. On the rare occasion that I boot into Windows, I almost always try to change virtual desktops by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right. Then I realize I am in Windows and I don’t have the cube that I love so dearly.

To help with the limited desktop space in Windows, I have found a program called Yod’m 3D (Yet Another Desktop Manager 3D). Yod’m 3D allows you to have 4 desktops in the shape of a cube. To change between desktops you simply press a keystroke of your choice.

Yod’m 3D has many preferences which allow you to change settings including which keystroke activates the cube, how fast the cube rotates, hot corners, mouse settings, and even the language.

If you would like some more information check out the Wikipedia page. Yod’m 3D was acquired from Chris’n'Soft and will continually be developed by Otaku Software under the name Deskspace. However, since this transition, Yod’m 3D is hard to find available for free download. Below are some links that allow you to download Yod’m 3D for free. Be aware that some of these sites are in languages other than English. If possible, try downloading from the first link.

Yod’m 3D does not need to be installed. You can merely run it from the folder once it is unzipped.

My only complaint about Yod’m 3D is that inactive sides of the cube do not update until you rotate to that side. For example, if you spend 10 minutes working on side #1 of the cube and then change to another side, the time on that other side will be 10 minutes behind. Once the new side of the cube is activated all the changes are updated immediately. However, this is still annoying and keeps the transition from being fluid.

Of course if you have used Yod’m 3D and the beryl/compiz cube, you know there is no competition. I merely use this program when I am in Windows since I am used to spreading out my work across multiple desktops. If you are looking for eye candy this is not the program for you. However, the new paid version, Deskspace, looks very promising. If anyone has tried the new version, please post and let us know what you think and how it compares to Yod’m 3D and beryl/compiz.
