You’ve decided to give Linux a try, so you downloaded the .ISO from your favorite distribution (Ubuntu *cough, cough*). The problem is, you don’t know how to burn the file to a CD or DVD. Since Windows XP does not have the ability to burn .ISO files by default, you will need to download a program with this capability. This post will show you how to burn .ISO files to a CD or DVD using CDBurnerXP in Windows XP.

Download the .ISO in which you would like to burn. Be sure to click ‘Save File‘ and save it in a folder that can easily be accessed, such as the Desktop.

Download and install an ISO burner such as CDBurnerXP

Open CDBurnerXP, and choose ‘Create Data CD/DVD‘ at the pop-up window.

Next, click ‘File‘ and then select ‘Burn disc from ISO file…‘ from the drop down menu. This minimize the main window and open a window called ‘Write ISO Image.

Click ‘…‘ to select the ISO you would like to burn. Then, navigate to the folder where the .ISO file is located.

Choose a burning speed. It is usually best to choose a slower speed such as 4x or 6x. You can however choose to burn at the fastest speed that your CD/DVD burner will allow. However, this will increase the chance of errors occurring during the burning process.

Select ‘Finalize disc‘

Insert a blank CD/DVD into your CD/DVD tray.

Click ‘Burn disc‘ to burn your .ISO file to disc.

Now, just sit back and let your computer do the work. Once the disc is done burning check to make sure that there were no errors during the burning process.
